ok i have a flock of 15 hens, all different mixes and breeds. there is amongst them a little black chicken who ive had for about a month, really small, flew really well until i clipped her wing but since ive had her shes never laid. cant remember the breed but shes supposed to be small....
anyhow today amonst the eggs i find this little egg. is it an anomoly (sp) or could it be from the small black chicken? i was told she would lay greent/blue eggs, but this is brown and speckled?
if its from one of the other girls, what would make a chicken lay a small egg?

I can't tell you why but sometimes they will lay an egg smaller than normal, sometimes they can be really tiny, like quarter size. Look up boof or fart eggs and you'll see lots of pictures.

What a beautiful little egg!

Smaller chicken breeds lay smaller eggs. Also, when any breed of chicken first starts laying eggs, her eggs are usually smaller. These are often called pullet eggs. As they mature, their eggs get larger, until they are the maximum size for their breed. Sometimes, if they have stopped laying for some reason, they may have a smaller egg or two when they start back up again.

It's hard to say what color egg your small black chicken should be laying. It depends on her breed and also if she is purebred or a mix. Mixed chickens can lay different colored eggs, depending on how their genetic lottery turned out.

i shall try and get a pic of her but shes a fast little thing!

got some! shall stick 1 here and the others in the breed section

It looks like a fart or fairy (I like fairy better) egg. If it has a very small yolk or no yolk you'll know it's a fairy egg for sure. Once in a great while they are normal inside, just very small, but usualy the yolk is missing or just a little smear of yellow in fairy eggs.

well a little update, we got another of these small eggs yesterday, totammy different colour to the other one but exact same size.

is it common for a chicken to start laying these little eggs, or could it be the little chicken?
