Hi Folks, I'm a new member, although I've been utilizing this site quite regularly. I have lots of questions but I'll start with this one.
What would cause a chicken whose been laying regular size eggs for months to all of a sudden lay an egg the size of a large grape? It's only happened once but it was weird.

Don't know that anyone has ever figured out why....it just happens. They're called "fairy eggs" or "fart eggs". I'm sure there are other names. One of my hens laid one the other day. Don't know which hen, and they've all been laying normally for months.

It's just one of those crazy chicken things that they do most likely. I wouldnt worry about it. There could be a variety of reasons, but as a one off, no need to worry. My serama lays a variety of eggs, matching the size of the large fowl silkie we have some days

Thanks for your input, I guess it's just one of those things as was suggested.

I just had the same thing happen to me today! I was flipping out wondering what was wrong with my chicken! So glad I saw your question and got an answer.

I have 2 Aracaunas, 2 red sex-link, 1 black sex-link and 1 red something/or/other. They have been laying for over a year. Now I get one of the Aracaunas laying one of those tiny little eggs everyone has been talking about. They have NO yolk and I get about one or two a week from her for the last 3 or 4 weeks. Is this really OK and just a fluke or should I be doing something for her?

It probably all right. Near the end of a laying cycle and nearing molt, when they may take a break, some times the egg production line gets of of whack. Have the rest of her eggs been alright?
