I have 5 Bared rock hens that I puchased in April 12 , my question is I have one or two hens laying 1 to 2 eggs a day and they are small. Is there smoething wrong or should I just be paitent ?

One thing to consider, have you weighed your eggs? Egg "size" is actually determined by weight, not the over-all size of the egg. My birds lay large to extra-large eggs (by weight) but they tend to look more like a medium to large egg.

Another thing to remember is that they have just started laying. You are likely to get some wonky, crazy eggs over the first several weeks.

I haven't been at this chicken thing very long myself, but I have noticed that my heavier birds tend to lay the bigger eggs. I have asked and bird size does have a bit to do with egg size.

Also, boost their protein intake. Cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, bugs, and even meat can help there. Make sure you are offering calcium too so that egg shells don't suffer. I feed cottage cheese or yogurt and offer crushed oyster shell free choice.

Good luck. I hope this helped!

Hello from the rolling hills of Kentucky. Welcome to BYC!

Have they went through their molt period? I think once they have molted the size of the egg will increase. I have three barred Plymouth Rock pullets and their eggs are smaller than some of my other breeds. Also one of my barred rocks will lay a double yolk egg. She's actually laying double yolk's at least once a week.

As you can see I'm very partial to the breed.
