Have a small flock of turkeys: A few 12 wk old chicks and a few adults. People in the area do not usually vaccinate their birds because considered it cheaper to just cull them--so we have to use biosecurity if we visit any of them! We had a difficult time getting a vet to examine any of our birds--get several referrals for them rather than care--the very few that will examine them lack knowledge and try to do the best that they can--and they would rather refer us to an avian specialist. And from an Avian vet, a few months ago, an Avian vet cost of us several hundreds of dollars for x-ray and blood work just to tell us that they couldn't do anything for one of our birds. We are not rich and famous.
There is supposed to be a USDA program that will test them, but they are more concerned about commercial industry?
A regular Vet charged Hundreds for what already knew was only fowl pox in 2 adult turkeys. Rest show no signs of FP. Request Vaccination for Fowl Pox for rest of turkeys. The vet wished to consult poultry professional about vaccines. We requested vaccination for New Castle, Cholera, Mareks, Coryza, Bursal, Laryngotracheitis (spelling). Time matters to vaccinate--as we do not want to loose them. Need some assistance - and just want to take action for our birds. We clean daily and deworm monthly and address parasites. Have looked on the site, but have only found pieces of information rather than data that is comprehensive and provides the following data:
1. Where can we purchase vaccines for small adult flock and chicks for all listed above? List of sellers of the vaccines requested.
2. How do we administer the vaccines? (fowl pox in wing soft tissue region?) But what about New Castle, Cholera, Mareks, Coryza etc.? Can some vaccines be administered in water such as New Castle and Cholera in both chicks and adults? If so, who sells these water vaccines?
3. Does someone have images of physical vaccines administration in wing, and what is the process of administration?
4. If we MUST purchase viles of vaccine for 1000/500 turkeys, what is the dosage per chick and per adult? Or is it as simple (holding a wing and a large bird isn't simply) as using the needle punch to dip and insert into wing soft tissue?
5. In what order should each vaccination be administered for both chicks and adults? (Understand that certain weeks chicks are vaccinated, but have adults so need an adult schedule too.) What is the duration between each type of vaccine and should certain vaccines be administered more than once?
Thank you in advance to all who can provide Detailed answers to all these questions.
