Hello. I joined here because I have a question about a very strange egg that my hen laid. About a week ago She did get into some slug bait that has a high iron content so I am not sure if this has anything to do with it. She seems to be doing alright besides still passing iron in her stool every now and then. Depending on which bird laid this, she also has not laid an egg in about 3 weeks or 2 months (brooding).

Hi mel. Welcome aboard. That sure is strange, but, also looks shell-less. If you hen didn't die, I guess she's going to be ok. As far as the shell-less condition, it might be low calcium causing that. Try adding some crushed oyster shells, (or egg shells) which you can get at the feed store, to her food. If she's still not laying normally, I'd try finding a farm vet in your area and have her checked out. Hope she gets better.

Maybe you could call the mfg of the slug bait, and find out what type of damage she may have sustained. I don't think iron, is good for chickens. I know when chicks need a boost they can have polyvisol infant drops but ONLY the 'no iron," kind.

Welcome to BYC,

As Drumstick Diva said, I'd try to call the manufacturer to see if they can tell you anything. If they can't, check with your country extension office or maybe a poison control center.

There is a very good article about egg abnormalities (like shell-less eggs) in the Learning Center and their causes:

Hope your girl will be ok.

Thanks for joining!
