Our freerange chickens came of age this winter- laid tons of eggs, starting small, then for a month or more, they got overall big, some were so large the cartons wouldn't shut. Someone consistently laid a double yolk. Out of 13 hens, I got usually 10-12 eggs. When spring started, the eggs went to medium size and less of them ( or they could be hiding some). 7-8 a day. And no more double yolkers. I thought winter was a slow time for egg laying. It's OK - I still am covered in more eggs than needed. Just wondering what to expect from the future. Oh, yeah, there are roosters (too many) and I'm in N. Ga. I suppose climate matters.

Many birds molt in spring, or do a semi-molt. Either way, it can decrease your egg production. When most of our girls decided to molt, we went from 10-12 eggs a day down to 3 or 4!

If that's the problem, you should see ragged looking birds and lots of feather laying about!
