Smaller eggs due to illness?

Hi all- I have a roughly 2 year old Buff Orphington who has been struggling with a mild-moderate respiratory infection (occasional coughing/sneezing/gurgling, but no changes in other behaviors, other than smaller than typical eggs laid less frequently). I tried to treat with Vet RX, which seemed to help but did not do the trick so I finally broke down and am in the middle of a Tylan 50 (subcutaneous injection) course. My question follows...Do you think the reduction in egg size is related? Will they return to normal? We are not eating them anyway due to withdrawal, but they look like normal eggs (not fairy) with yolks, just smaller. Here's a picture of the smaller egg compared to her regular size.

What dosage of Tylan50 are you giving her? Did you know you can also give injectable Tylan50 orally?

Respiratory illnesses can impact egg productivity and egg quality. It's very possible that the reduced size is caused by illness. With her being 2 years old, she may also be coming out of lay to begin molting, sometimes a smaller egg may been seen during this time.

1/2 cc Tylan 50 2x day between the shoulder blades. I've read that absorption is better when injected and she doesn't mind the shot at all.

How much does she weigh?

If she is a large BO you may not be giving her enough. Tylan50 dosage has a wide range of 10-40mg/kg given 2-3times a day. The "mid range" of 20mg/kg would be .20ml per pound of weight 2-3times a day. If you give her an injection only 2 times I day, I would use a higher dose of .30ml per pound of weight for 5 days.

I hope she starts to improve, please keep us posted.
