smart chickens

i let my chickens out in the evening for a couple of hours of "free-ranging" in the really big back yard. when i walk up to the coop/run area they all run to the fence. then i walk past to go to the other side. they all take off running to the other side as soon as i'm out of sight. they meet me at the gate waiting expectantly for me to open it.
they are so smart. who said they had a bird brain?
