I have had multiple breeds in the past and the breeds that have really shined their smartness are my barred rocks I have had 5 that were learned to potty trained and if I described there actions to someone you would think they are dogs! I have had multiple strains an colors of silkies as well and they appear to be more of a dumb breed they are highly lovable but they do NOT catch on very quickly! I recently got 2 new barred rocks Camo and Nascar! They are about 5 days old now and Camo is severely sweet and Nascar L-O-V-E loves to run and play!

I do believe that some breeds are smarter than others. My personal experience is that the larger fowl and the heritage breeds tend to have more smarts than the smaller bantams, the high production breeds and the silkie type birds. But there is always a dim bulb in every breed of chicken.

It's like comparing apples and oranges. Barred rocks have nothing obscuring their vision, silkies do. This makes them appear dumb. When people cut back their beards and crests they discover their silkies are not dull witted or slow.

I don't have silkies, I don't sell silkies. It's just true in most cases. Maybe they can't compete with BR's, maybe other breeds can't as well.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Think you'll get a lot of different answers to this, I'd say my Sumatra, EEs, and when it comes to food Leghorns are my smartest breeds. But there seem to smart ones and slow ones in every bunch. Kind of a running joke around here that the Silkies and Polish use up their extra braincells growing their crest feathers.

Hello and welcome to BYC. My BR chicks seem more confident, daring and are more friendly than my EE's. I'll see which is smarter when it comes to egg laying, lol.

Hello everyone and thank you all for the welcomes I do agree their is a lot of answers to this....lol once again thank you all for the welcomes!
