What should I do!? I have a completly smashed egg, and the chick is still alive. I have a pic on my phone but it won't post. The mom hen smashed it a couple days ago and it keeps getting worse. They are due to hatch tomorrow and I just peeked under the hen and one egg is peeping already. What should I do about the poor chick? Both hen and I are first timers. Help!

You could tape it or put candle wax to try to seal it up. You would need to remove tape before it could hatch.

If it was a small crack that would work. Let me try and paint a better word picture... This morning when I peeked under the momma hen, I found the smashed egg under one of the other eggs. It made a nice little cup for the other to sit into. About half of the shell is smashed and about a quarter of the shell is off. I want to help but I don't know what to do or if I should do anything.

Oh Not Good. Are you sure the chick is still alive? I think most would say survival of the fittest and let it be. Me - If it's still alive - I'd try to help it. I don't know if this would work but, What about covering its smashed side with another fresh shell and using wax to seal it together?

I'm positive the chick is still alive. I saw it move the membrane that is still covering it.

It must have a strong will to live so, I think you gotta try to help it.

If you try the shell cover - make sure it's fresh so the egg white is moist to rewet that part of this chicks membrane.

I left and came back to the coop and momma found the damaged egg and did the poor baby in... :'( it was a beautiful chick but just to early to survive, still had the yoke sack.
