Rest in Peace 1957-2024
Spray just before you leave for the play and spray as soon as you get back from the play.

Yes, I will candle them as soon as I get back from the playOk, there is alot of good advice here. I have seen someone here put tape over a crack to help hold things together. Not sure if that was said or not. Also. Can u candle both and get a short video and post. That may help determine about how much longer (estimated guess) .. the chick in the white going by size has to be close to day 14ish...
It's a hard call...I'd know better how to advise if there was any idea how far along the eggs are. At this point though, a higher humidity would be to keep the membrane from drying out and shrinking around the chick. That's also what the coconut oil is for - it softens the membrane. You can see it "darkening" as the oil self-spreads along the membrane. Don't feel bad about going to your little girl's play - you have your own chick to support. Sometimes things happen and little birds go off to fly in other skies...or at least that's what I like to think. We just had a terrible hatch with only 3 out of 16 shipped eggs making it and I feel pain when that happens, but .... life is uncertain. Do the best you can and keep us posted! New Boots and I are keeping our fingers crossed for you!I've got the humidity at 63% currently... Should I go higher?
Any guesses on how often I should apply the coconut oil? I was going to assess it every 2 hours or so?
The predicament I'm in now is that my daughter has a play tonight. She will be very upset if I miss it... So I'm going to have to gamble on whether the egg will be fine in the incubator for a few hours. I did put some coconut oil on it with an eyedropper so hopefully that will suffice for a bit
I would use a brush and not spray though. The chick is peeping, so it's breathing the air outside the shell...I wouldn't spray. Just tiny dabs of the oil from a very small brush. At least a third of the eggshell surface is horribly cracked
I have another chick in a brooder next to the table where I have the incubator. It was abandoned by its mother yesterday. I think the chirping you hear is from that chick.I would use a brush and not spray though. The chick is peeping, so it's breathing the air outside the shell...I wouldn't spray. Just tiny dabs of the oil from a very small brush.
