So l've smashed my thumb... in a car door of all things, because some how I move too slow while closing my own door! Who else has smashed their thumb?

It hurt alright but at least it only hurts when touched or when I try to use my thumb. I wish the point of impact could have been just 1/4 in or like 1/2 inches closer to the tip of my finger. I'd be glad to have broke off the whole tip vs having the current damage. The base of the nail is so swollen I'm afraid it will fall off and be forever marred. I have an odd attachment to my nails. When they are cleaned up, even, and buffed, some think they are fake. But now I might have a bad nail.

Oh well... too late and it could have been worse.

Guess it could have been a lot worse. What's your story? Did it result in a lost nail? Did it come back? Is it the same now that it's back? Is there any hope of being able to get half inch long nails again?!?!

Left is the damaged one, right is my my normal one.

Woops!

I was a roofer for 15 years. We hand nailed for 7 of those. I have hit the wrong nail more times then I would like to say. Now I can hit it and it don't even hurt.
Good luck that looks like it smarts!

I smashed my thumb in the safe at work. It is one of those 6 foot tall 4 foot wide 2 feet deep heavier than you know what. I am lucky I caught the door with my other hand because I could have probably severed my thumb.

Hubby was looking for a wrench in the car. Sherlock here went to the trunk to search. Hubby didn't know and jumps out from the other side and SLAMS the door shut on my hand. I slip the hand out just in time by the middle finger got the full impact. My natural instinct was to keep it moving till the finger was out. It broke! I completeley shattered the tip of my middle finger. Needless to say I have a "man" finger!!!!

OUCH!!!! I'm not sure I can read anymore of these stories, I hurt in sympathy. I have hammered the wrong nail more than once, but it never looked as bad as that. Looking at you thumb, you will probably loose the nail, but the nail be probably isn't damaged so you will grow a normal new nail. Sometimes drilling a small hole in the nail relieves the pressure and helps keep the nail.

I had that done once, it hurt more then what caused the problem to begin with!
It did relive the pressure though.

I've done the same thing. You probably won't start to loose your nail until the new one is growing underneath it. I also had a nail completely ripped out (all the way) and it grew back quickly and looks just like it did before. It is not "funky" looking. I was upset just as you are now, but after going through it twice, I know it will all be fine. Hope this helped ease you a little.

I was playing with the neighborhood boys (13 yo tomboy) and we were sparring with wooded stakes. I got my nail smashed between two of the wooden stakes. Dad tried to get me to let him screw a hole in it to release pressure but I refused, and it throbbed for three days, then my nail eventually fell off. I did read in a medical book, when I grew up, that you can release the pressure by heating up a clean paper clip and making a hole in the nail. Now that I would have done

Not my thumb lately but i have my share of mishaps. As a teen i had a sporting accident and they took me with the car to the hospital, got there openend the door, so did my friend in the back seat. I hold onto the frame//window area try to get out as she smacks the door shut and get on top of my bum knee three fingers smashed. Last night i ran my toe against the doorframe now its all purple and swollen, today i walk the dog barefoot in the yard after i cut the lawn and get stung on the other foot on one of my toes. Now i got on top of my pruple toe a red swollen toe too
