Smelly chicken run

I built my coop and run about 2 months ago. The run is about 10x4. I have 8 RIR's and a duck in there. The coop is elevated on the one side. I put about 3 inches of sand on top of the soil and it is a mushy mess. Not to mention it smells horrible. Did I mention I am new at this? Anyway can someone steer me in the right direction to cut back on the odor, moisture, and flies?

I think the run is much too small for that many birds and that adding a duck to the mix makes it worse, ducks are always pooing and on everything . There is a product some use called "Stall Dri" for horses and it's supposed to be very good in the coop or run.

! Great to have you here! I agree with drumstick...a larger run would at least spread out the concentration of chicken and duck poop. Any way to boost the size of the run - that would at least ease your problems. Good ouck to you!
