Thanks guys guess I'm going to be busy at the weekend breaking the soil up and buying a lot of straw here's hoping this works

We use straw, grass clippings & pine shavings in our run, no odor or flies. The run is covered so it stays dry., not sure how it would work uncovered.

Your set-up looks really nice, just kind of small if you want the manure to decompose naturally. (Like other posters mentioned.)

If it were me, I'd remove the top crust with the stinkiest stuff and throw it away. Rake the soil deeply, maybe mixing in some wood shavings & gypsum, maybe some sand to get the soil loose. Then cover with a mixture of hay, dried leaves, dried grass clippings, etc. Straw is hollow and I've been told it can harbor mites, so I don't use it myself.
