Any suggestions for mitigating the smell? We just got 9 ducklings and have them in a brooder with woodchips for bedding. I wouldn't mind the smell if they were outside (and I wasn't pregnant) but because they're only a week old and it's getting down to nearly freezing at night here, they're stuck inside for a while. Our basement doesn't really get heat so its almost like being outside so they can't be down there. Adding bedding works for about a day and then I have to add more. I tried coop refresher and it didnt do much. I know they're just smelly animals and thats fine, like I said I think most of it is just that they're inside and I'm sensitive to smells right now.

So definitely can't be kicked outside yet. I also think ducks smell, my small experience with ducklings had me cleaning out the brooder twice a day, unfortunately.
Thats good to know. If a twice a day cleaning is necessary then that is what it is. Like I said, its mostly just that Im extra sensitive to smells right now.

What’s your water set-up like?

If you can minimize them getting the wood chips wet, that should help (somewhat) with the smell.

I give them a water dish inside a pan that’s then set inside another plastic container.

(I know my brooder here is too small but that’s all I had at the time).

Oh, that makes a lot of sense! Thanks!

I used a tin (curved rim)camping plate under their waterer.
Just emptied it out when it started to get messy or when I filled up their watered. This kept the shavings dry.
I have a plate under it and it helped for a bit but not for long.
