Smokers And Past Smokers- I have some questions for a project.

1. What age were you when you started smoking?
18

2. What age are you now?
29

3. How has smoking effected you medically?
Decreased lung capacity

4. How many cigarettes/packs do you smoke a day, on average?
Half to one pack a day

About 5 or 6 times. Currently pretty much quit since July 15th, other than a few cheats, maybe once or twice a month.

6. What brand do you smoke?
Used to be Marlboro Smooth, now when I cheat, its DH's Marlboro Lights

7. How has it effected people around you?
A bit of ostracization - having to go outside to smoke, irritation from coworkers when I would take a smoke break, even though it was my regularly scheduled break.

8. Do you regret smoking? If not, BE HONEST. I miss it, I liked it. It just costs WAY too much. I have other things to spend money on.

ETA 9) I think I started because my boyfriend at the time smoked, and his friends smoked, and I wanted to be "cool". After that, it's because I liked it. I've started up every time I've quit because I like it.

Honestly, I think I'll fail this time too....and it's ok, because I'll just keep trying, and someday, I'll quit for good.

If the question arises WHY I like it - I like it because nicotine is a drug, and it helps with my chronic pain, it helps my mind calm down, and it helps settle me down. I like the taste of some brands, and I like the smell. If pipes tastes as good as they smelled, I'd probably be an addicted pipe smoker.

As it is, I settle for cigarettes.

I had a little episode with a kid probably 6 or 7. I was sooooo stressed out.

Of course the schools tell kids they should report their parents when they know they do drugs. They include smoking.

I had just talked to my husband and was trying to get up the nerve to do some Christmas shopping by myself. I have some issues, so he would talk me through things I needed to do. I let up a cigarette.

Standing outside a Starbucks and this little kids is looking for change in a phone booth (you remember those right? Used to have them where you could make a call while you were away from home. You can see them in old movies). Anyway he finds 2 quarters and runs up and says, "LOOK! I found all this". I just smiled at him and say "uh huh" and then he starts screaming and pointing at me yelling "YOU"RE SMOKING! YOU DO DRUGS!!!!! you're gonna go to jail" About that time like 5 people walked out and started staring. I looked at him and said "Your going to go to jail too. You just stole money from the phone company, so you may be going to jail too" and he got a shocked look and ran to get in his dad's car. Dad was standing there waiting for him to check the phone booths. People were still looking at me so I said "OK I smoke." Two of them asked for a light.

Like I said. I deal with a lot of stress and anxiety. I've stopped smoking for a long time, but when I'm stressed I smoke. I really if ever drink, never have done drugd (OK the kid said I did) , but I stay away from people when I smoke. I think none smokers are ruder than this smokers. You can be half a football field away and they have to walk past and start a confrontation. And just to be clear I wasn't yelling at this kid, just pointing out I wasn't breaking the law, he was.

BTW...I think your simple anonymous survey has turned into something of a confessional. It's actually been helpful to me to read of other peoples' struggles with cigarettes. Kinda makes me want to quit even more.

Thanks.

Sure wish I could answer the 10th question. Never had much luck with quitting.
