Is Smz 454 the same as Bactrim?

Is smz 454 good for ascites or peritonitis?

Hen diagnosed with peritonitis but lays daily. She has ascites.

If 454 is good for ascites what is the dosing using a nip spoon and needless syringe? Do not want to isolate or dose entire flock.

Thank you

No they are different drugs, but both are sulfonamide antibiotics and similar in action. Bactrim is sulfamethoxazine trimethoprim and smz is sodium sulfamethazine. Here is a good link for dosage (2 Tablespoonsful per gallon of water) for 2 to 6 days depending on the disease. Please read the whole link and decrease the dosage as posted:

I am not sure that SMZ would be the best drug for egg yolk peritonitis and ascites. Many use amoxicillin or better, enrofloxacin (Baytril.) Some people drain hens with ascites with an 18 gauge needle.

Thank you. Yes unfortunately I read several sites but still don't know the dosage using a needless syringe and nip spoon.

Thank you for the clarification on the different drugs. I would like to administer baytril but can't since I can't find the dosage.

Can you separate her inside a wire dog crate during the day to drink the medicated water? If you want to use Baytril the 10% dosage is 0.05 ml per pound twice a day for 5 days. That would be 0.25ml or 1/4 ml for a 5 pound hen. Most pharmacies will give you a free 1 ml syringe without a needle to give meds to animals and babies. Here is where to find the enrolfoxacin or baytril:
