Today I had a an experience I don't want to go through again. I built a 2 X 8 temperary run for my 3 week old chicks. I had them out about 3 hours and all was fine. I ran to HD for material to start another coop and as I got out of the truck I heard one of them screaming. I look over at the chicks and saw one on the ground with what I thought my black chicks on top of it. So I walk over there to see what the black one was up to. It wasn't the black chick, it was a 2 foot black snake. I reach in and got snake and chick with the snake wrap around the chick. I unwound the snake and got him loose from the chick, slamed him down on the ground and put the chick back in the run. I put my foot on the snakes neck, pull my .380 and blew his head off. Everything seem fine then. About 30 later minutes I heard the same chick screaming again. I went back over there and saw blood on his leg. I found out the snake had a bite hold on the chicks leg. When I pull him off he took part of of the chicks thigh down to the tendons and bone. I took the chick inside, cleaned him up, applied Neosporene and two bandaids. He's upstairs now in his hospital room and the rest are in the brooder. One thing is the chicks are getting use to being handled.
Later I went to the coop pen to put a new feeder in there and found a black racer in the pen. I was in a bad mood already so he lost his life too. I think I'm going to have a bad summer with snakes. The hurt chick is a red sexlink I bought from TSC.
Tomorrow is another day, to do it all over again?
