Snake Deterants

:lau I actually put one in my coop last summer to keep the mice in check! Have no fear they are docile and non poisonous. Just be sure it is a black snake. Incidentally, my DM says they actually deter other snake species!

also rat snakes good too

:idunnoHmm! Well definitely need to verify what snakes i'm dealing with. Last summer we had a snake take all four of our three day old chicks from the coop. Guess I assumed it was a black snake , due to that's what I see most. We do have copperheads, but actually haven't seen any in more than a year.. Interesting that you actually put a snake in your coop. The snake doesn't scare the chickens?

That would seriously freak me out and we see snakes here ALL the time.

I am freaked out. Now that it is warming up here, i'm constantly looking around for snakes. I sure don't want to go through such a loss again. It was so sad.:hit
We have stray cats around and we think that helps to keep the snakes away. Our favorite cat that adopted us died suddenly last year. He was wonderful with looking for snakes. I can't imagine going out to my coop and seeing one. My neighbor had an experience with a snake that ate one of her guinea chicks...it appeared to be a black snake.

I heard of black snakes eating eggs also, so i'm really shocked:eek: to hear of one actually being placed in a coop intentionally..
