Snake has taken up residence near my coop

garter/ribbon snakes eat amphibians. Likely the bulge was a toad. Rat snakes will eat eggs and chicks, but more rats and mice.
Be certain of the I.D.

Isn't it nice to know that you can protect your flock while showing mercy and regard for wild things too, like in this case where it is just as easy to move the snake as it is to kill it?

I doubt that snake is eating eggs...a mouse or frog yes, eggs no. Your golf ball recommendation is a cruel method which causes the snake to suffer before it dies...even a venom bearer does not deserve that method of death.

OP: Capture the snake and relocate it if it is bothering you by being that close. Personally, I would leave it and let it do what snakes do...keep rodents away because I have no fear of snakes.
