Snake in nest with hen

Thanks Redranger209. Too late to kill the snake. I already relocated it, bulge in belly and all. So it is gone. I hope you are right about the eggs still being viable. I am trying to convince the hen to return to the nest but so far she is having none of it. These are peafowl eggs that I gave to the chicken hen who had gone broody two weeks ago. I might have to give them to another broody hen to hatch. Fingers crossed.

Cheer up. You'll likely get another chance to rescue a chick from your egg thief because the odds are really really high that your snake will return.

A hen who has been sitting for 36 days like your second sitting hen has been may give up in disgust before she finishes a 46 day tour of duty in the mother department. So don't be surprised if you have a total hatching failure.

Hi, chickengeorge - Not worried about the snake returning since I removed the eggs from the coop (which was at a neighbor's farm) and put them under another hen in another coop at my own farm about 5 miles away. If the snake returns it will come back to a coop with no eggs or chicks.

I know the hen who has been sitting for 36 days might give up...but for now she is guarding her nest ferociously. We will wait and see if she can last another 10 days. In the meantime I just had 3 chicks hatch from under still another hen so I have finally hatched out my first 3 peachicks. Hoorah! I am so proud!

Congratulations. I only hope that you light snoozing neighbors are as thrilled with your pea fowl as you and I are.
