Snake in the Coop

I just separated my roosters and my hens because my hens were loosing there back feathers ,so I was going to add more hens to my flock and when i did i would have put the roosters back in the run.There is a snake in my coop right now when i went to get my eggs for the afternoon they were all gone it ate all my eggs and from a recent storm i put plastic in my coop to keep every thing dry it has curled up in the plastic.Waiting for my dad to get here to help out it is a big one.Wish My roosters were in there,They probably could have killed it.Me and I decided to pull the plastic,because I thought it was dead from suffocation,but no it is alive and well.Ill update you guys when my dad gets here......

Oooh! Not what anyone wants to go into their coop and find! Been there a couple times with rattle snakes. It motivated me to snake proof the run. It was worth the time and money spent installing hardware cloth all around the perimeter and creating sills out of cement under all the gates so a snake can't slither under.

Oh, and my rooster acted like a scared little girl and just stood there and screamed.

Thank goodness. Idk where you're located but please be careful it could be poisonous. I doubt it but always better to be safe than sorry. Try to find where it got in and close it up.

Large snakes may also attack chickens especially broodies, those laying in the nest boxes, juveniles, chicks or bantams. So watch out for that as well.

Do you have any idea what kind of snake it is? If its a black snake or a king snake, it probably won't bother your chickens too much. Black and king snakes are just after the eggs and they are not poisones, but you will probably have to dispose of it so it doesn't keep coming back. As long as you don't have any tiny bantams, or chicks, they should be ok for a while. If the snake is poisoned it will have a diamond shaped head, where as non poisonous snakes have more round ones. This was in my big chicken pen,we did kill it.Thank goodness none of my hens were acting broody.but I do have chicks in a different run so im putting burlap over the windows.I normally dont have leave the coop door open night because there protected by there fencing and netting but not anymore.

not sure what type of snake it was,appeared to be some type of water snake.It was gray with black diamonds.

Be very careful it could have been a few different venemous or nonvenemous snake species.

not into snakes now to old for that non sense but darn be careful please burlap all around should stop them as it scratches thanfully we ony have garter snakes
