Snake Question

Use as much hardware cloth that it takes to completely enclose any space you are trying to secure .

People on a different snake thread said they had good results leaving some bird netting around the coop and letting the bottom hang down loose. The snakes try to get thru it and get stuck and die.

Grandma's sure fire snake eliminator was to blow out an egg and fill it with salt. Any snake that eats that dies. In case you don't have a grandma to teach you how to blow out eggs------------- Poke a small hole in the end of an egg, insert a broom straw and whisk it around, then insert a straw and blow out the contents. Fill with salt and tape over hole, replace the egg in the nest. I really don’t know if a snake will eat a golf ball or plastic Easter egg, but they sure will eat a real egg sitting in a nest that smells like its suppose too. You know, like a chickens butt.

darkmatter , that would do the trick , grandma used glass eggs too , I put a real egg in the plastic egg , when a snake claims my pigeon eggs it's hitting the pocket book too . Think I will have to fill some eggs with salt . Thanks for that info ! I am very aggressive when it comes to snakes about the coops .

Howdy ,
You have a Caique . How wonderful . Started to get one early spring but passed on it . We have 3 parrots as it is plus all the rest of the gang . They are beautiful . I like them better than the Sun Conure . The breeder that I got my Grey from has one and it is stunning and just as cute as it can be !

drumstick diva, doug8 and Whiskey Bay.... I have secured the perimeter similarly, but don't know how to do the door... Starting to wonder if I can put up a 2x4 near the bottom on the inside of the stall and run the hardware cloth or bird netting from there? It would make you step over into the doorway, but that shouldn't be an issue.

All of you are wonderful and have some great ideas that have made me think harder to find a solution.... I appreciate it

I had a 2' or 3' rat snake take a small chick recently -- 3 or 4 days old. I'm sure he was in there for the eggs, though. Usually if they eat a golf ball or ceramic egg that will get them, too. Best thing to stop snakes is bird netting, inexpensive stuff you get in the gardening dept. to keep birds off strawberries or fruit trees. Bunch it up a bit around the coop and they get tangled in it and can't get our.

I have always used lime sprinkled around the perimeter. I've only had a problem with one snake in MANY years.A couple years ago I found a water mocassin under my rabbit cage trying to get up to them.Actually had climbed up the side of the wood and was trying to figure out the wire issue.I figure he came in through the front gate as it has a large ditch across the road out front.Hubby took care of him.I have several dog kennels I've used for babies,quail,etc.It is covered over and down the sides by netting.(not poultry,as I live in a commercial fishing community and acquired a very large shrimp net). But it has worked very well for ground and air predators... Also keeping your grass to a minimum helps out.

Yes , I would go ahead and place that 2x4 in the doorway and sink it into the ground . Are you trying to close a gap from the floor to the bottom of the door ? If so a 2x6 would be good also that way you can bury more and still close the gap ? You converted a horse stall right ? How are you fixed for overhead security and for the sides ? I think you are armed with ample fire power to combat the next one , if one ventures back around , but still would like to know about your overhead and sides of your pen or coop .
