SNAKE, SNAKE, BIG SNAKE (PICS)

That's a black rat snake. We have them all over the place here and in fact, I pulled one out of my next door neighbors bush Sunday. Just grabbed it by its tail and threw it into the yard. I wanted to hold it to show the kids, but it was MAD at me. It ended up going up the tree in our front yard.

They WILL kill the chicks and they will also eat the eggs. A black snake just ate three 1 month old chicks from the lady that lives behind us. The daughter found the snake in the coop with the bulges in it's belly.

It's a no-win situation though. Black snakes are great to have around because they kill rats, mice and other snakes. But they also kill chicks and eat eggs.

Edited to add: After doing some quick research on drowning as a method of euthanasia I have found that it is a highly debatable topic. And some more addition: It isn't accepted by the American Veterinary Medical Association as a humane method.

Gee, I would sure have to agree that drowning and struggling to live is not nearly as humane as a quick snap in a trap......

When I called my local Animal Cruelty Agents to discuss removing raccoons from my property, they told me that I was permitted to trap the raccoon, but without a rehabber's permit, I was not permitted to transport the animal. It was their advice that I get a large trash can filled with water and place the trap with the captured raccoon in the can of water to drown it.

As I've said before here, it is illegal to discharge a firearm, air gun, bb gun or anything similar in our neighborhood unless it is a matter of HUMAN life or death, so we don't have any other options.

By the way, I saw a mole outside and shot it with a 22. Man am I a good shot or what? It was 40 yards away and right next to the barn where the chickens are. I guess I could have waited for the chickens to kill it. But I don't think what would have been human. And besides the darn things run to fast.

I do have chickens under 3 months. I will need to watch them. But I still can't kill the snake. If he gets one of my chickens I will move him to the state game lands and that will be the end of him. Maybe he's here because he's eating the moles. My yard has holes all over from them.
