SNAKE, SNAKE, BIG SNAKE (PICS)

Maybe I'll wait until my DH gets home and I'll have him help me move it.

Well I better call my grandson. He will help. I could put it in a pillow case like kees said and move it to the woods about 10 miles from here.

Is that far enough away?

Boy I would just love to pick it up. It's so shiny. It's sunning it's self on the rocks.

black snake to me we have a few of those and brown praire (sp?) kings they all are good to keep insects, mice and rats down. I'm with you I would have been the 1st to pick him up. My DH has a liking for them just not as much as I.

or been pulling his gun out and shooting.
I'm sure your chicks are safe as long as they have a rooster around I don't believe the snake will take them.

This is the kind of snakes I have (mostly) removed from my barn; they're black rat snakes.

And yes, as others have mentioned, they will eat small rodents (mice in my case), eggs and chicks. You'd be surprised at how large a chick they can eat so let the babies grow quite a bit or they'll be dinner for the snake. I lost a chick that I thought was too big for snakes but was wrong - sadly.

Overall, these are good snakes though.

These snakes can climb as high as 12 feet and lower themselves by anchoring the tail section. They often enter sealed coops and barns via the eaves, especially ones left open to ventilate hay. They can go up and squeeze through vents and will go under doors that do not fit tightly. I'd move it if it can be done safely. They like to curl up in nest boxes especially, be careful where you put your hands. Chicks are not safe.

Start looking ar ound your facility very critically. There may be more, if a female she may have many offspring already. They're moving into the heat at this time of verr and can be very active. I don;t think there's any need to kill it, but getting it 5 miles away would be a great thing to do- don't leave it near another farm! Lovely looking reptile...

I'd use a noose alright...did I type that and submit that statement? Yeppers I did.
My girls bless their hearts love to eat baby snakes! I do not fear them, but like Ive said, if you and I want to cohabitate on the same acre of land...lets not meet each other.

What a beauty!
If your chicks are protected with 1/4-inch hardware cloth the snake cannot get to them.
I'd do something so that I could keep him around and not have to relocate him. He's totally harmless. I do have to say though that when I first spot one, even it's it's tiny, I let out a yelp and go straight up about five feet. After I land, I check out the snake and walk around it.
I've never seen a poisonous one on my property; if I did, I'd kill it.
