It seems there have been alot of threads relating to losses due to snakes so here is an effective trap. My parents came across this method quite by accident but is effective. They had some plastic bird netting (type used to protect garden crop from wild birds) loosely rolled with a snake entangled. After the second or third snake they realized how effective it was as a trap.
Perhaps a few of these traps around the coop will keep the girls safer at night.
 
its much, much easier to just use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire, plug what ever holes exist, etc. Unless the "traps" catch 100% of the snakes you'll want to protect the birds with hardware cloth and other measures anyway. Once the coop is secure, the traps are not needed.
