I found a snake in my chicken barn this morning, about a foot and a half long. Could it have harmed my chickens?

We'd need to identify the species before we could answer that. Personally I'm surprised you saw any snake under 2 feet long in your coop, my chooks would have bashed it to death and swallowed it.
