Just was wondering if anyone has ever had a hen hide an egg somewhere on her self? I ask because this morning i went to feed my flock of mixed hens. I have been picking up all the eggs making sure i collect them all, not all of them lay their eggs in the hen house so i have to search for them. so i am checking all nooks and crannies, I have enough hens. I know i have not seen the hen in question sitting or having any behavior that she was going to be a mom. Every morning i feed them ect. look for eggs and make try to make sure no one is attempting to sit. Sometimes i let them out to do some free ranging, and in the evening when i close there pin up i count them making sure everyone is there. Everyone is behaving normally. Anyway this morning i saw the hen not coming to eat and i assumed she was just laying an egg and that when she was done she would go and eat. When i returned with there fresh water she was up and eating with the other hens. I noticed that she didn`t leave an egg, Well we all know the sound a chick makes. As i was leaving i heard this chirp knowing that there is no way i heard a chick, but to my surprise there it was a little bantam chick and the hen trying to cover it and quiet the little guy. I am a lot puzzled, seriously how the heck????????? So that is why i ask. Thanks for your time.

Back in the day I had many hens show up with a clutch of chicks. Understand that when I was a kid everyone trapped and hunted and predators were at a minimum. Today hens on hidden nests are generally in danger. Congratulations on the surprise.

Yes, one of my in-town birds, Noodle, who had been broody, managed to hatch herself a puffball even though I'd been collecting eggs. I guess she had it up under her wing while I was rummaging around under her.

Puffball went to be Junior Flock Rooster at a friend's house.
