we have a whole ranch full of sneezing chickens! all with runny noses, some with gurgling when breathing... and that one in particular has a putrid smell... from the breath I think.
the first to be runny nosed were new here, and they cleared up with Sulfa after the two day treatment, but then a few more 'got it' and now, they all have it...
I googled and am sad to read about Poultry Coryza, which is sure sounds like... and the fact that they are to be considered carriers forever.... they do throw the term around for a few diseases (organisms) however... but hemophillus and mycoplasma are the two tops... neither are good... the second worse...
both render the birds carriers...
even after treated, and symptoms gone...
so, here's the deal! I just hatched one... and four came in from a friend from the County fair.... those are all a few days old and in the bathroom...
and I have 32 eggs in the bator on day 9.
what do/can I do with these?
I understand we must now either cull all and eliminate all poultry for a few weeks, treat with oxine and start all over...
OR
we can stay a closed flock and no more egg hatching (passed into eggs to chick) and let them all die off as they will.... which does allow us to harvest eggs... and when they are all dead, do the same procedure as a full cull...
help! what do I do??? has anyone had experience doing culturing?
anyone confirmed whether they ARE carriers after the runny nose clears by treatment (with sulfa)?
I think we all told now have 60-80 birds... and I hate to cull them. I JUST got my blue copper marans to laying!!! the first eggs are in the bator...
thanks.
