sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

chickerdoodle, she is eating her layer mix fine and is drinking the medicated water, she does NOT like yogurt so am thinking of mixing some probiotic powder on her food (just need to break the capsules) - is this a good idea?

She is crazy for lettuce and am giving her some warm oatmeal with DE powder and flax seed, a bit of grated fruits and veggies and a bit of meat for good protein. She will stay in the house for another week, at least, she's being a very good girl and not at all demanding.

I just want her better, I don't like the sound of her lungs right now.

I dont know what to suggest, but I'm hoping for the best

Based on what you've written, I would suggest getting some Tylan 50 or Tylan 200 ASAP and giving her an injection. I had birds with similar symptoms, tried antibiotics in the water, and lost them. They get to a point where they won't eat or drink and then start wasting away.

For what it's worth, several of my birds where in such a deteriorated shape (i.e. their eyes were closed and swollen and they were gurgling) that the initial injection didn't fully work and I had to give them a second shot. I'm keeping an eye on them now and their noses have stopped running, I don't hear the gurgling anymore, their eyes are open, and things generally seem to be getting much better though some are not completely over it. I know the Tylan has saved several birds that I would have otherwise lost.

Now, wouldn't you know it, we have rain again today. Go figure!

God Bless,

Baby parrot food has lots of nutrients as well as probiotics. It is good for chickens who are struggling. You can get it at pet stores like PetSmart. It is a powder you mix with water (Be sure to stir a couple minutes before feeding, so the mixture thickens up BEFORE it's inside your chicken).
I'm using this with very good success on some chickens that had been weakened by mites.

Folks, Antoinette is on the mend!!

I didn't want to jinx it (and hope I'm not!!) but I doubled the concentration of antibiotics, added powdered probiotics and fossil shell flower to her treat of canned dog food (1 tablespoon... she goes crazy for it) and I think it's finally working...

Tomorrow will be Day 5 that she's in the house, resting and being warm, eating like a little piggy and pooping all over the place LOL!

She hasn't laid an egg since Monday morning so that's good, gives her system time to mend.

Her sneezing has greatly reduced, as has her nasal discharge, and the wheezing and gurgling have all but subsided. She's bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and looking very good

She keeps flinging her head though, like she's trying to shake something out of her ears - getting rid of gunk?

She's my little runt-angel, that one...

I'll be sad to put her back in the coop in a few days, hope she doesn't get sick again!!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR THE ADVICE, INFORMATION, CARE AND COMPASSION - YOU ARE THE BEST!!

Oh, I am so relieved! I just read this whole thread holding my breath, hoping it had a happy ending!
Keep us posted as she returns to her usual, perky self!
And give yourself a treat for all your work!!! A manicure, an ice cream date or bit of canned dog food maybe?

Yay!!

Great news

I'd say your best symptom so far is her "flinging her head", She's probably trying to get that nasty human smell out of her nose. She is trying the Chickens' only Fabreze solution by pooping everywhere but a human house is much bigger than a chicken house.

I just read the entire post too, as I am dealing with very similar situations, rats and a hen with a runny nose out of just one nostril. I have been watching her every day and haven't noticed a change but at least now I have an idea as to what to do if it gets worse or doesn't go away on it's own. UHGGG chicken keeping isn't easy!

BTW, I have tried rat poison, rat traps and picking up the feed at night and still they are there. It's disgusting! How can they be so smart?

Glad to hear you hen is doing better!
