sneezing chicks

All chickens sneeze and have colds
one time or another, dont worry!
Absolutely NOT true! Chickens do not get head colds. They sneeze from environmental causes like dusty bedding, feed or ammonia build up, but they do not get colds.

Sneezing alone is rarely cause for concern. Be sure the bedding isn't wet or too dusty.

Chickens may contract respiratory diseases that can leave them carriers, like Typhoid Mary, in your flock, like mycoplasmosis/Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) or Infectious Coryza or Bronchitis, all of which are carrier diseases. Some are viral, some are bacterial, but if it is a carrier disease, even if you treat symptoms, they are never truly cured.

Any serious breeder would cull the bird who was symptomatic from one of these diseases, to answer one point that was brought up. I would, too, because once they are in the flock, these diseases I'm talking about never leave. They are not colds.

Alot of my grown hens sneeze. It hasn't slowed egg production or does it seem to be a bad thing. The coop and grounds are clean so the sneezing is not from that. Maybe from the wind blowing dust around but not from being in a dirty environment.

My chickens sneezed and then stopped and are perfectly healthy same place same time of year same conditions no dust etc so its not the environment and its not a disease, and ive read many places that talk about colds

Anyone who tells you a chicken gets periodic "colds" doesn't know what they're talking about. Sneezing isn't a cold. Most sneezing is caused by envionmental factors, even eating too fast can cause sneezing. Ammonia can build quickly in damp, hot weather, so that can start a round of sneezing if you have let the ammonia build up.

I have one hen who is 5 1/2 years old and she has sneezed for 4 of those years. It's just peculiar to her-she has a small head that is not in proportion to her big body and I believe her nasal passages are not formed well, but she is not ill and has never had anything contagious.

A change in environment will stop laying for a period of time, as will any stress. Chickens are not machines, they are living creatures, affected by all sort of external stresses.

For future reference, you never get a new bird and put it in with the ones you have immediately. You must quarantine for 4-6 weeks to keep disease out of your flock.

This simply cannot be stressed enough. Quarantine!

I have experienced sneezing when conditions were damp, when the coop was dusty, if there wasn't enough air flow- but it can certainly be a disease. Listen to Speckledhen, she knows her stuff.
Here is an article on respiratory illness in chickens: (scroll down on the post)
