FD52B2DC-652A-46C0-AA59-BB5E5BF79A77.jpeg Hi, I have a lavender Cochin Roo who is constantly sneezing and mouth breathing. Iv’e been to the vet once with no help. Normal poop, comb & wattles, wormed, eating and drinking on own a little, tried Tylan 50 injectable, Vetrx, vitamins, Nebulizer, Colloidal silver...REALLY struggling to breathe!!! Any suggestions??

Have you tried antibiotics. When I first had my chickens, they were ok for the first couple of days but because they liked to sleep in their nesting box they started to struggle to breath and were very wheezy so I was advised to give them tetracycline

I’m sorry to hear about Silver. He is lovely looking! You are doing everything right. Keep trying, keep him warm and out of the wind. Are his eyes swollen? Where are you putting the VetRx? Nose, under wing, on a small cloth in the cage?
He is currently kept inside our house. His eyes are not swollen. Vetrx on nostrils and under wings.

I have tried Tylan 50 tablets & injectable

Have you looked in his mouth? Or feel down his neck and see if there is something stuck or swollen.

Did you try all those treatments together? Is there any gurgling when he breathes?

With the information you've given I would try the VetRx or Colloidal Silver on the beak to be inhaled. With Colloidal Silver 2x a day. Anything you can give him to eat that he'll eat let him have it. Wet mash or scrambled eggs are a chicken favorite. Nutri-Drench in the water can be a helpful boost too.

When giving antibiotics an accurate weight is needed. Make sure he's getting enough. I've done antibiotics 2x a day for a week. I've also given a heavy dose for 2 days then smaller for 3 more. (Like a Z pack for people)

Keep us updated and we'll see what we can do to help.

This may sound weird, but the best nose-clearer I ever had was when my mother made cinnamon-flavored lollipops as Christmas candy one year. Cinnamon air fresheners have a lesser effect--but one may make your chicken more comfortable while he gets over whatever it is.

Just a suggestion. Good luck.

He may have a virus called infectious bronchitis that will have to run it's course over about a month. Mycoplasma (MG) can also look like that in mild cases, and it can be treated with Tylan 50. It only comes in the injectable form, but I recommend giving it orally at a dosage of 0.2 ml per pound twice daily for 5 days. Getting a weight helps. How much did you use and for how long?

How long has he been sick? There are other respiratory diseases, and with any of them, they can be complicated by secondary infections, such as air sacculitis. Most of them last for weeks, and some can be chronic, making them carriers. IB fortunately, only makes them carriers for up to a year.

Sorry that he is so sick, but make sure that he is drinking enough water and eating well. Offering him treats of chopped egg, liver, or tuna--not too much but as an addition to his usual feed would help with vitamins and extra protein. Hope he recovers soon. Also welcome to BYC.

He is not gurgling and the vet didn’t hear any sounds in his lungs. His mouth looks normal too. Inflammation?? Vet gave me something for that but I didn’t notice a big change. Aspirin??
