Sneezing pullet with snot bubble- help!!

I recently brought home a 3 month old pullet Cochin frizzle (named Pearl). She has been sneezing and has an occasional snot bubble that appears on a single nostril hole. I'm so scared it's MG! What are other symptoms I should watch out for to either confirm or rule out MG? Is MG really that common? She is showing no other symptoms besides those that I've stated. Good energy, eating, drinking, normal poops, no goopy eyes or raspy breathing. I do not want to pay $150 vet bill for a bird that cost me $10, however she has quickly become my favorite girl... help!

She has been in a cage with two other birds- none of which have been introduced to the main flock yet. Pearl is pictured in the attached photo.

Sorry your girl is sick. I've dealt with a bout of mg, lost 1/3rd of my flock in it.

It starts off like any respiratory thing... sneezing, watery eyes, nasal discharge. The main thing that I ran into that distinguished it from other respiratory issues was with MG it progressed to watery eyes that would also sometimes have small bubbles in it. The watery eyes may begin to become red and swollen, staying wet from the discharge. They also scratch the eyes due to discharge and can scratch the skin off around their eyes and it just gets worse from there with oozing, bleeding, swelling, and infection.

Thank you so much for your help! I feel defeated, due to the fact that I am just starting out and have already dealt with so many issues. I haven't noticed any watery eyes as of yet, but I will keep the bird quarantined until I am confident that it is not MG. Also, I have not noticed any developing respiratory issues in the other two birds she is Penned with. I started Pearl on Tylan 50 last night. Fingers crossed she shows some improvement.

Are you familiar with coccidiosis as well? A couple of my newly purchased week old chicks have showed signs of blood in their stool. I've treated them with corid.. they've been on it for two days (1.5 tsp per gallon is what I used).However last night I noticed more bloody stool. Should I be concerned of another form of infection?

Don't be discouraged. You're handling everything the right way. I've dealt with all these issues when I was getting back into chickens too.

I deal with cocci regularly. In Louisiana it's a right of passage for chicks.

Keep them on the corid and don't let them have access to any other water. I don't see improvement until after about 7 days, sometimes longer depending on how bad of a case it is. And I ALWAYS have it show up in every batch of shipped chicks. That's the main reason

Hatchery chicks are usually from chickens that are kept in a sterile environment and are not introduced to the bugs that our yards have, so they have to build immunity. The birds that I lost to MG were hatchery chicks, but I also have a lot that were not affected at all.

Hang in there, as adults they're pretty hardy for the most part if you stay on top of general husbandry and care.

Granted there are some things you can't avoid like diseases spread by wildlife, but keep those that aren't affected and eventually you'll have your own resistant flock. Best of luck! Keep us posted.

Greetings Joanna,
I had a similar issue with some new 4-6 week old chicks. A vet prescribed oral Enrofloxicin. After several days with no improvement, I ordered Denagard 12.5%, (Tiamulin Hydrogen Fumarate), on Amazon. Payed the extra fee for next day delivery. Diluted 1 tsp. Denagard per gallon of water for 10 days. Must make a fresh batch each day! By day 3 the sneeze and nostril bubbles had reduced and the chest rattle was gone! By day 5 they had no symptoms, but I continued till 10th day. Needed to add apple juice concentrate to encourage acceptance, due to the bitter taste. Treat all the chicks that are with the sick one too. Keep them separate till completely healed.

This is just another option...hope and pray all goes well for your little ones.

Hi all! Thanks for all the support and information!

Update: We are now 5 ish days into treatment (Tylan 50 injections, vetRX, probiotics and electrolytes). Pearl seems to be getting worse I've recognized no improvement. The two other pullets that have been penned with her since day one are showing no signs of respiratory illness, so that's good. But I've also read there is quite a lengthy incubation period for these types of things. I have the three separated from my other babies and plan on keeping it that way. Pearl is however very active, eating, drinking, normal poops, and no noted facial swelling or irritation. I'm hoping she will begin to show improvement soon...fingers crossed!

I've accumulated a chicken drugstore at my house in hopes SOMETHING will work!

@Hen Pen Jem what is the difference between Tylan and Denegard? Thanks for the info!

Hey Joanna- i have the same issue here. I treated it the same AND no other chickens have it. Mine are 6month old. I treated the rest of my flock with tylan50 just in Case. Sorry I don't have more the share, but i do find it suspect that no other ladies have it.

I wonder what it is!! Gosh, it's so frustrating! Do you suspect it's MG with your baby? Or do you think it's just a seasonal annoyance? Did you have any improvement with your bird with the Tylan?
