Snow in October!!! HELP!

They'll be fine, as far as the temperature is concerned. Is there a specific problem with their current coop? Like, it's too small if they get snowed in or the roost is right in front of the vents, that makes it a bad winter coop? Tarps can temporarily fix a problem when a storm is coming.

Happy to report that we got the ladies into their winter coop. We did this in the dark in the middle of a bad storm, but we did it! They are warm and happy. Which was better than we were. We got 27" of snow and had no power for 3 days. No running water, no heat. But hey the chickens were warm!! Also just wanted to point out while everyone around me was freaking out about what they were going to eat, I had fresh eggs every day...just saying. Love my chickens

Isn't the weather wonderful here in New England lately - tornadoes, tropical storms, record early snow!! Glad your coop is all set, this is my first year also so it will be a learning experience for me with how the chickens cope with winter.

Ah, zip ties! Those things are a Godsend. I used hundreds of them when I was putting up wildlife netting to cover the new run, not to mention when I was attaching wire at the bottom to lay on the ground to deter digging predators.

I need to get some more tarps though; I'm thinking of putting some up along the sides of some of the runs as wind breaks or maybe even some over the top of part of the run to leave a bare spot open in the run for the chickens in case we get any snow this winter. This is my first year with very fuzzy footed cochins, and I don't know how good those feathery feet do in snow.

This weather is all over the place! Good to know there are others out there experiencing their first winter with chickens!

I can't believe what lousy weather you're having out there. I don't know why we're having such a nice fall. It must be to make up for the recent winter when we got over 100 inches of snow. I wonder how much you're going to end up with this winter, starting so early? I hope your whole winter isn't this bad.

y'all with the mega winters amaze me. when i get my chickens, they'll not have too much problem w/winter. the problem we'll have here is the summers when it's endlessly hot.
