Snow

during the day they are outside in a fenced in area, and there is chicken wire over the top so no predators get in, etc.

Just check the ice and snow load on your overhead netting.
Watch that wire roofing for snow accumulation!
Yes, these!!^^^
I have 2x4 wire on my run roof and even it can hold snow if conditions are right,
it almost collapsed the first winter.

so I shovel some areas clear for them and they can make do a few weeks with more limited run space.
Yep, I shovel all winter long, for them to have space to walk around and to give me access to keep roof cleared and it helps speed snow melt season.
Learned that the hard the that first year when I had to wade thru knee high snow to save the roof.

I am (admittedly) a crazy Chicken Mom. For my girls, I have heavy duty plastic over their large, attached run so that the weather doesn't impact them as much. I spread straw on the ground & their door is open so that they can pop in & out of the house as they see fit.
oh wow such a good idea i may do this

We are expecting our first freeze this evening, so I just covered the people door to the chicken yard with clear plastic. I use a clear, thick shower curtain liner, fold it in half lengthwise & staple it on. It's not as thick as the other plastic, but a) it's more than adequate, b) I can see them & c) the girls can see outside a bit. They're going to be in for the winter, barring any warm, sunny days that may come along so I don't want them to go too stir crazy.
