Rethinking this Emu thing...it may not be a joke after all.
Some of these birds seem to be very high-end, very pricy.
Depends on who you find to buy them. Prized leather, unique
feathers, Emu oil in various things.
Even the eggs are highly sought for carving. (Em...are your eggs
really "three-shelled" as in green outer, bluish center shell and white
inner shell?)
However there are also a few minor traits, such as...
fast, mean little devils.
Just born, they may be from 8-12 inches tall AT BIRTH.
In just a few hours after birth, they can run.
As in get away. The only animal that can do a 180 turn at a dead run.
Fastest adult speed was clocked at 42 miles per hour. (You chase one a
couple of hours, you're a 100 miles from home. Gonna need a ride back.)
Cover nine foot a step. Hard to corner something you can't catch.
While the average height is 5 1/2 to 6 foot, they can grow to an 8 foot height.
(They won't quite fit in my coop)
Average weight is in the 100 pound range. Can you say Big Bird?
And yes, they can be mean...three toed, one long fighting claw. But most
as docile, tame...until they decide to eat you.
Now...can Em actually ride an Emu? Yes, saddles avaliable. And oddly enough,
even Emu races around the county.
So...while we're laughing now, who's going to be laughing last?
And Em...it sayd these beast can easily live 25 years..so you better get use
to them.
Happy Trails....
