We got one EE and the rest are RIR's...Heard her crow at 6 this morning...That would explain her/his behavior..I told my sis as we were watching him one day that he sure acted like a roo..He was protecting the flock from some birds flying over, would not let the ladies out, sure did his job..But, we cannot have a roo where we are...So, I am trying to sell or swap him..He sure is a beautiful thing too...Bummer...

I am waiting the "roo wait" too. I got 6 chicks from the feed store and immediately pegged one as a possible roo. I sure want her/him to be a pullet. She/he is definately NOT the Australorp/Black sex Link she is supposed to be. She is black with a red breast and scattering of red in her feathers. Very pretty. crossing my fingers it is a pullet mutt and not a rooster dinner.

I'm on the 'roo waiting list' too. Every day I tell my 7 chicks they have to be girls! I want eggs! However, I'm pretty sure my EE is a roo too . Well, if I get 6 hens I'll be happy. And I'll keep the roo if he behaves and my neighbors don't complain !

you do know a hen can crow? especially if you have no roo. check the feathers on the back above the tail are they pointy or rounded. pointy = rooster

Pointy...such a bummer..

I have to laugh, Been there, Done that!!! I had a "hen" who magically developed into a roo at 5 or 6 months (and very typey. too). I have a juvenile separated right now because it was a roo and fighting with his brothers...Guess what? He's a SHE! I have also had a hen that crowed...I was totally floored first time she did it!

Total bummer. I'm so sorry. Was probably your favorite one, wasn't it? Man!!!!!

How old is your rooster? I'm still doing the waiting game too, but I wasn't sure at what point I was in the "free and clear" zone.
