i somehow acquired 2 runaways and i have questions. please help

Wow those are gorgeous! You ordered her?
Complicated. I wanted to give chicks to Tassels who has shown herself to be an unbelievably determined broody.
So timing was everything.
I start looking for chicks available at the right time near me and everyone tells me that they have closed their incubators having over hatched earlier in the season. So only started pullets available. I didn’t think I could fool Tassels that a 6 week pullet had just hatched!
So then I went on the Meyers website for chicks hatching at the right time and they were very low on stock. Very little variety and very few available of the types they had. So I gritted my teeth and ordered one of each of the 4 breeds they had hatching that week.
Then I drove to Ohio to collect them.
And now you know I am totally nuts!
But they are cute, and Tassels is so happy and proud of her babies. She is carefully teaching them everything she knows.

Go Tassels! Good momma 😊 she is a very random one, but very pretty.

Isn’t it a requirement in the chicken keepers handbook to be totally nuts to own chickens?

Actually I think scientists will eventually identify that it is a virus. Once you get a chicken you get infected with the virus and the virus causes you to do crazy things for your chickens!

I believe the virus is “Morechicks”. Not curable, but there’s a vaccine we’d have to get it before we have chicks…

They’re so cute! What are the other three breeds?

The things we do for our chickens…several of our neighbors have chickens and one day my SO was installing a very fancy solar powered exhaust fan in the coop. This is a big fan, meant for attics. It was expensive and probably a little overkill. But I had to have it to keep the girls cooler in the coop this summer. Well the cursing ensued as the installation started. The neighbor came out and asked what we were doing. My SO sarcastically explained that the chickens can’t be exposed to heat above 60 degrees in their coop blah blah blah. Neighbor must not have caught the sarcasm bc he went off about how much money his chickens saved him! I’ve never heard anyone say that before about chickens. They must not have a xylophone 🤣
how is that even possible? does he keep them in a cardboard box and feed them dirt?

how did you get them under her without her noticing? at night? details, please 😊
and will you keep roosters if some are?

@alinas2010 , I wondered too. This is a good question.
Some people have an empty shed/barn and adding a roost is all it takes.
Some people don’t count anything other than feed when they calculate the egg price?
Anyway , I hope the neighbour is taking properly care of her/his chickens.
