We made a homemade incubator for my son's science fair project. We have made one before and had 3 hatch out of 8 eggs. Anyway, we have candled these eggs like every 2 days since the beginning, we are due to hatch on the 17th. I will not candle the last 5 days, but is it okay that we have already candled so much? I just want him to experiencing everything and to have good notes for his project. OH and another question, I can't seem to get a good candeling picture to show on his project, I keep covering up my flash but it's not working. How do you get a good pic of the candled egg? Thanks

As a general rule, yes, every 2 days is too much candling. However, in your case, I can see why you did. Alot of candling increases the chance of dropping, introduction of bacteria, etc. I can't help with the picture thing though, never tried taking a pic when candling. Hope your son gets a good grade on his project, sounds like he's earned it.

I am guilty of Chronic candling

But Over the past year I have gotten better about not doing it so much. But I have to say my first hatch I was candling daily (I was soo Excited) and I had 23 of 24 eggs hatch, so I think as long as your careful, and wash your hands before touching (I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer next to my bator that I used every time I touch them.) you should be fine. But that's just my opinion.

Good Luck!

You need you to find setting on your camera to turn off the flash. Then put the camera on a tripod or secure surface. Hopefully your candler doesn't involve someone having to hold the egg because any slight movement they make will cause blurring. I glued a rubber ring to the top of my candling flashlight. Then I put the flashlight in a small jar to hold it up right. I carefully place the egg in the rubber ring. With the room dark, no flash, camera on tripod I shoot. Using a remote cord is best. Editing the photo in Photoshop will often help distinguish the veins. Good luck!
