So do they turn the dirt or pack it down?

Yup Judy, exactly what I had in mind! I suppose I can try and make that a weekend project. I would very much like to see pics of whatever anyone comes up with!!

I have both in my pens. They have most of it packed down, but they have a few holes they've dug to dust in, and they end up expanding on it as time goes by. Occasionally, if I notice they're bored, I'll take the shovel in and turn up a few places to give them someplace new to dig and scratch. They love it.

I do have a covered grass area in my run.
Its wire stretched over 2x4.
I plant rye fescue mix and the birds just love it

packed, I have 2 pens , after each winter, I allow the one pen to grass up , them move the birds in there. The grass doesnt last long, but they love it.

After I move them, I till the pen they were in and replant seed, right now the lawn is looking pretty good in there. I will let this pen grow all year so the roots can grow deep. This way when I let them in next spring the grass will last longer.
