Hi everyone,
I've been coming to this website for over a year now in order to learn how to raise my girls. This year, we added three Bantam Easter Eggers to the flock, and in two weeks we'll have our first hatch! I decided it's time to become a member! I have 8 Rhode Island Sexlinks, and my three bantys. We live in the Texas Hill country (it's HOT!) and am always looking for ways to cool my girls' off. I also look forward to meeting everyone!

Hello fellow "Its hot!" chicken parent! :frow Welcome!! I hope you really like this site as much as I do!
We have had an inordinately hot summer this year, and I really had to change up the way I kept everyone cool. (I also started some breeds that don't tolerate heat all that well, so that made me rethink my strategies as well.) I have misters in 3 coops and in one prime location for the free rangers, I also have upside down storage tub lids in my grow out coops for the littles to splash around -and make mud in .
I also reduced the amount of corn I gave them, and try to offer "cool" snacks like melons and various garden greens. We also have lots of good, deep shade - and I created a lot of shade with tarps, etc. on my more exposed runs. It's been quite an effort, but so far, so good.
Hope you have wonderful success with your birds! :)

Thank you for the awesome suggestions! I tried low swimming pools, but they weren't interested. I like the idea of upside down storage tub lids...I might give that a try. I can't use misters in the coop as our humidity is already outrageous. However, I might try to build an overhang that I can attach misters to for use during the day (my girls free range during the day). Interestingly, I have noticed my girls eat more when it's hot. I can't get them to eat oyster shell, so I feed them back their eggs to increase protein and calcium. I also feed corn, straight from the fridge, cantaloupe, blueberries, and yogurt. The only other thing I do is water down a patch of dirt and leaves where they like to scratch.

So good! Yeah, we get pretty hot here, but as we say, "it's a dry heat" (27% humidity) - although when it's 113 degrees, any kind of heat is HOT!! :)
