Hello. After a year of research and consideration, I got a small (3 hens, 1 rooster) flock of chickens about two months ago. I purchased my group off of craigslist, complete with a coop and some accessories. Despite having done some research, I was/am as clueless as any first time-time chicken keeper. I was VERY lucky to end up with a kid- and dog-friendly group, and the rooster is especially charming. I have two small children, and Mr. Rooster, who is about 1 year old, has been a complete gentleman so far. It's so cool to watch him care for his hens, watching out for them and finding them food.
Two of the hens are Speckled Sussex, the rooster is a Bantam gold-laced Wyanadotte (I think) and the third hen is a daughter of the rooster, although I'm not sure if her mom is one of the Sussex or something else (she's tiny, doesn't resemble the Sussex at all, but who knows).
Loving my chickens and looking forward to lots of entertainment, and a few eggs, in the future!
