We've had chickens for about 5 years now. We keep a variety of RIR, Americanas, Bard Rocks, Silver Wyandotts, and we have a couple Buffs. We try to keep around 30 hens, but lost several in the last few months to critters. We currently have 19 but will be building our flock back up this Spring.

Is electric fencing an option for you - just to send predators on their way.

Not really - my boys just did some major renovations on our coop, though. For years we didn't shut our coop at night, with no problems. Then we started losing them last year, and locked them down at night (which is when they would disappear). Then raccoons were getting in a killing them. Since the coop has been redone, we haven't lost any, and will be setting a trap for any critters that get too close.
