Thanks to all the discussions on here, I decided to try adding yard "compost" to my chicken pen area. We used a lawn sweeper to sweep up all the grass clippings and tossed them in the coop. This is the 2nd time we have done this in the past week. The birds are SO happy when we throw them in and they make an amazing ground cover that doesn't smell like my attempts at other substrates have!

I can't wait to do this too! We haven't been mowing our grass much since it's so dry and hot in the summer. It barely grows in the patches that aren't dead and dry. Once fall comes around I hope we get some growth back! Our ladies will be so excited.

I put clippings in for my guineas, they would leave the food and eat the bugs, seeds and clippings first!

My friend has many different chickens, when he mows the lawn he drives around the pen blowing the cut grass into the pen, it's so funny to see the chickens run and hide from the blowing part and when he passes by they run out to snack on any insects and munch on fresh grass clippings!
