I am excited that I am settled enough to get back into poultry. I got preoccupied with being self-employed and was way too busy to take care of my birds properly. When a predator got into my coop I lost all my chickens and lost heart. After seven years I am settling down and have start(ing) up flocks again. I have 5 acres with a 30’ deep pond, one HUGE grow bed, chicken coop, pig pen and a barn under construction and various other out buildings.

I currently have 6 ancona duckling and 3 emus I just hatched. I am incubating white leghorn eggs, coturnix quail eggs, guinea eggs and turkey eggs. I ordered the eggs off eBay and I am incubating them in homemade incubators and turning by hand, both mine and my sweet brides.

Other animals on our homestead two pigs (Sonny & Cher), two little dogs (Wee Dog & Lottie) a barn cat that adopted us (Smokey) a pond full of channel cats and perch, an aquarium full of guppies and a couple of mini aquariums each with colonies of Sea Monkeys. : )

Projects in planning and construction are:
1. Frame over my garden for 30% sun block screen
2. Larger chicken yard
3. Fence area for emus
4. Finish barn
5. Dig 400 square foot shallow tank (with my Tractor) to grow duckweed for my fowl
6. Hand drill a well (TRY to anyway!)
7. Oh my! this is just the ones on the top of the list, I will stop!

I live in Southeast Texas on a gravel road 2 miles off the main road close to the end, so no through traffic.

I have a wife (Tammy) of 33 years and we are extremely happy and content with each other.

My two daughter and their husbands live in homes on our property along with 5 grandsons and one brand new granddaughter (she will be spoiled.)

We gave up being self-employees so we don't have to work 7 days a week, be gone all the time and we can enjoy life and our grand kids. I am now a draftsman at a small engineering firm and a part-time preacher on Sunday and Wednesday.

I read the forum all the time, now I can post,

G'Day from down under John :frowWelcome!

Great introduction! Thank you for sharing :clap

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock and/or other critters, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Glad you're here John! Welcome back aboard!

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, if you're into gardening, feel free to join this years SEED SWAP (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/seed-swap.1220129/)
