So...how does one cull?

Correct, however, it has been used in recent times to also describe killing. It's easier for people to say they had to cull the chick that was deformed, or the bird that suffered serious injury.

i am about to try to kill a couple for the first time as well.
i had read that a .22 to the back of the head "execution style" was a quick and humane method.
i'm a little nervous about it because 1) i'm really not into killing things and 2) i made the mistake of making friends with my chix.
i don't think i'll have a problem with the 2 roosters, as we have not gotten along too well, but when it comes time to take out one of my girls, i think i'll feel awful.

thanx for the reminder, critter - safety first. figured i'd hold him down on the ground by his neck.
bullet should go through his head and lodge in the soil. then cut the throat to drain him.
not looking forward to it, but he's tearing up my girls. he's just gotta go.

I know what cull means. I just didn't want to title my post "how do you kill your chicken?"

So, according to definition 3, it DOES mean to kill.

Thanks for pointing this out. I don't disagree with putting a bird out of it's misery or using a bird to feed ones family. I'm surprised to recently learn that people will kill a perfectly good chicken because it doesn't meet their criteria for their specific breeding program. A life is a life, regardless of how easy it is to come by.

I just assumed you meant to dispose of... sorry if this became unnecessarily creepy with all the killing...

Using a gun can be dangerous because a bullet can hit the ground and then bounce back and hit you or someone close by... In my opinion it is to close of contact to use a gun... I would twist the neck hard and fast. no fuss no mess... then take it someplace to drain the blood...

I personally don't enjoy using knives with them. I take my .22 and just one in the head does the trick. Little flapping around , hardly and exit wound then once the flopping is done I drain the blood and clean it up if i'm eating it. But just as long as you do it quickly to lessen to suffering than and method will work I suppose.

I really don't think the OP wanted a discussion about the definition of "cull."

We do the chopping block method. It's quick, easy, and most folks already have an ax.

For chicks, the easiest is to do an old fashioned "neck wringing" since they are small.
