Well I got a call to come help an Aunt with something. That something was a solo goose in her horse pasture. We managed to corner and catch it. Its safe for tonight in a stall with a bucket of water and some hay to nest in.

While we look to see if any of the neighbors are missing one, any idea on breed? I assume its a mixed. And while I can sex chickens, waterfowl are a different ball game. Any tips?

It likely will be found a home but she kind of wants to keep it. I've been trying to convince her it will be happier with a Flock, but that might backfire and she will Get it a flock instead.

I’m guessing it’s a mix, but mostly it’s Chinese in type.

As for if it’s a gander or hen, there are some signs but ultimately geese can be hard to tell because they are very individualistic.

Ganders tend to be more likely to want to be between their partner and whoever is approaching them, if you have two ganders or two girls the more dominant will fill this protector role.

Ganders tend to be a bit more gregarious, but some female geese are amazon queens and Chinese geese are often dripping with charisma so good luck with that.

Ganders tend to have a taller neck in proportion to their body than females who tend to be more squat, but body types vary quite a lot between western vs eastern breeds and some breeds can be less conspicuous so without a close relative of the opposite sex to compare them with it isn’t always an accurate gage.

Post in your local Facebook poultry groups see if anyone lost a goose
Call your local shelter see if anyone has called in looking for a goose
But If this goose was released intentionally by someone then chances are it’s a male.
Get some good waterfowl feed, buckets, bedding (I use pine flakes) and a kiddy pool or a concrete mixing tub
If nobody claims it in two weeks, get it a friend- I would look for getting one female goose . Then you can start to find out if this one is male or female.
Just my 35 cents (inflation)

Have never seen a goose like thst before, very pretty. Maybe if she turns it loose it will go home?
It was in the pasture All day before I got out of work. My Aunt was getting really worried the coydogs would get a goose dinner. So I dont think it will just go home. And its skinny, Im thinking it wasn't getting fed right.
