I was outside watering,, enjoying a nice fresh orange,,, it was sooooooooo gooooooddddd!!! I was licking my lips and put the last half of my orange between my teeth for safety,,,, and reached down to move the hose,, As I bent over to grab the hose,, little Woo leaped up to grab the orange! She succeeded in grabbing my lip when she grabbed my orange, so I guess I can be forgiven for dropping the orange as I screamed in pain from the darling little Banty hanging from my lip. But as I dropped the orange to the ground amidst the many little feathered moochers my brain suddenly screamed " OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!! CHICKENS CAN'T HAVE CITRUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!" At least that is what some on BYC,, the bible of chicken-hood that I read everyday,,, say. So I threw myself into the melee trying to grab all the pieces of the orange that I could see being grabbed by various feathered heathens who didn't know they were placing their own lives at risk by grabbing those luscious, tasty, slices of heaven. As I grabbed for the nearest piece of orange, Red Hen grabbed and ran for all she was worth! I scrambled after her groping on the ground for the other pieces,, trying to yank them out of little and large beaks alike. Luau screamed and fluffed his feathers at me as I tried to take a piece from Show Off his little lady, he didn't appreciate my trying to save her life at all. In the process of saving my ears from Luau, Red Hen had already swallowed her wonderful, poisonous, tasty, treat! So I gave up on her, pooor, pooooooor, Red,,,, poor little Show Off,,, she ate hers too! But 3 little Frizzles still had pieces they were carrying so I chased them into their pen and tried to grab the pieces from their little innocent looking beaks,, hah!!! I grabbed a piece of orange and got grabbed by an evil miniature minion of Satan! That little witch grabbed my little finger on my right hand and hung on for dear life,, it hurt! So I flung her delicate little body into the baby house and laughed as she bounced into that huge pile of straw! That will show her.. Then I realized that she was smiling as she finished swallowing her tasty little morsel. Her two sisters were sitting right next to her too,,, and there was one little piece of orange left,,, so I leaned forward and stared into their beady little eyes,,, I reached forward trying to sneak up on that dirty little sand and straw covered slice,, And then I held up to their nasty little selves and said "here,, eat it!!@!!!!" and walked away smiling,, right through my fat, painful, lower lip!

Oh, how funny. I am sorry, but it is so funny. Let's hope that isn't true about the citrus? When you think about it...Florida has lots of wild, free ranging chickens now don't they? They also have thousands of citrus trees? So.....................?? Can we have someone who actually knows some facts to jump in here. Sorry, you got a swollen lip there my dear but you need to write this down in a book or journal. Sell it some day with all the things that have happened to you! You will be rich!!

Don't worry that little bit of orange probably wouldn't hurt them. I often feed my chickens citrus with no ill effects. (I know there is some debate on the subject, but I don't feed it all the time. Sometimes I cut up 10lbs and feed it to my layer flock of 25 to 30 hens.

I have never been sure about the citrus thing,, so many say no,, but I know mine have had tiny little pieces before,, but the idea of almost a whole orange put my common sense on hold.. This morning I wore sandals and the students though my toe that got pecked in the yard this morning running for the truck was funny,, that's a whole 'nuther story,,, wait until they see my lip in the morning,,,

really? they can't? i never heard that.

bird books show projects of tying orange peices to trees to feed the birds in your neighborhood so i never put it together that it wouldn't be ok.

what's the reason behind it? anyone know?

I've thrown pieces out here and there... like if my lil girl didn't finish some or it dropped on the ground and got dirty...

its not that they CANT have citrus, its not a poison.

Citrus can cause the egg laying to drop off a little but only if fed in LARGE quantities. I feed my citrus weekly and never had a problem
