Well, I have 2 eggs from them so far - may get another today. Smoothmule, I am located near Eldon which is about 30 minutes from Jefferson City on 54 - if nothing else maybe we could exchange some eggs if that's too far. I do love my Seramas so far and would love to get some more. They are very sweet birds. The man I got mine from had several blues and splashes, mottleds and tons of other colors and combos. I don't know where he got his original stock from, but he says he had them shipped in a juvi birds. These guys are young and the brown pullet just started laying. I'm not sure that the splash colored pullet is laying yet. I am questioning her as well - she looks longer legged than the other pullet and there just seem to be some body type differences. I will try to get some pics of her by herself. I'm wondering if maybe she could be a cross? She is very dainty..... Smoothmule I also love the great color variety! I hope they don't intend to change that in the standards; not that I think we are ever likely to get super serious about breeding, but I think it would be a shame to loose all the lovely color combinations.
gocrow77,
Eldon isn't that far at all. Well, pretty much any direction you go from here it's 30 minutes to an hour to get to town other than the local small towns. I've been to Eldon several times. I bought 2 of my MFT mares there too.
Rather than worry with eggs, when you have some chicks we should see if we have anything to trade. I have 2 mature roosters and 2 hens (my flock from Jerry's) and the chicks I have are 2 three month old roosters, 1 two month old pullet (a keeper) and 2 month old rooster chicks. One of my hens is setting on 6 eggs right now so we'll see how she does. They should hatch Friday or Saturday. I've let her set some for me before then took them the last 3 days and hatched them in the house cause it was too cold in the garage where they're at now. It's warm enough now but I plan to take them as they hatch to raise in the house. I should have some chicks by the weekend. Have you weighed yours so you know if they're A, B or C? I plan to weigh mine Wed. my husband brought his digital scales home for me to use. They are so sensitive they could almost weigh a feather and it will weigh in pounds or kg's
Smoothmule, I don't have any scales yet. I have no idea what class these guys are in. Both eggs are in the incubator; hope they will hatch for me. The folks I got mine from are supposed to be at Jacob's Cave this weekend and I hope to get a few more birds from them then. I had no idea I was going to love this breed so much! I wish you great success with your hatch this weekend, crossing my fingers for more pullets for you, sounds like you have plenty of young roos, lol! Sounds like I need to get a good scale for these guys....I know pretty much nothing about Seramas other than the basic info, but I'm working on educating myself.
Gocroww77,
I wouldn't worry too much about the size being perfect. If they are purebred Serama's, you'll have a chance for all 3 sizes even if they're "c" sized. Learn the proper conformation and traits and work with that and you'll find you'll get some that are small enough "and" correct. I have quite a few more people wanting to buy than I have chicks, so I'm just working on getting as many hatched as I can. They are notoriously difficult to hatch out till you have some good breeders or learn to handle the eggs just right. The best hatch, 3 of 3 eggs were from letting Diamond set them till the last 4 days and hatching them out in the incubator. I don't know if that was it or just luck but it worked. I've had as poor a hatch (from a friends surplus Serama eggs before I bought my 2 pairs) as 3 out of 18 eggs to hatch.
I do expect I'll have some to sell later this summer but I'm betting there will be a drop in the number of buyers by late summer. Spring is just a busier time so if I have a good number hatched, I'll hold on to a few to sell next spring so I'll have some for the early bird buyers. I also want to do some trading for another pair this summer so we should stay in touch for sure. I'll weigh mine tomorrow and let you know what I have.
Talked to them again today - they are selling out of all their Seramas. I will be picking up a few of them tomorrow at Jacob's Cave. They aquired their original stock from several different sources - one of them being Jerry, the originator of the breed here in the US. She didn't mention names on the others just someone from the west coast, someone up near the northern boarder towards Canada, and a few others. If you are not busy this weekend I would make the drive and see what they have to offer - I know they are selling them fairly cheap. I love my two pairs, but would like to add a few more pullets - may not be available except in pairs though, we'll see.....
Dang, and I have to work tomorrow and Friday. I'm an RN so it's possible that I might be called off on Friday if there aren't many surgeries on the schedule............not likely but I can hope.
Mine are all from Jerry's. I've decided to sell the little cockerel that may be chocolate. His down was the way chocolate looks in other breeds but he "looks" black right now. I was told that's possible that he's still chocolate but since I've not done enough test breeding to know for sure, I can only offer him as what I know, chocolate colored down, from Jerry's (known to have the chocolate gene in his flock) and his first feathering looks black. He isn't mature enough to ship yet but will be in another month.
I planned to go to Jacob's cave on Saturday, very early. We have a family dinner at noon and I'm about 2 hours from there. The dinner is at my husbands sisters so I can cook ahead of time and make a super early trip there and plan to leave by 10 am.........dang. I could spend more time if I went Sunday but I hate going the last day thinking what I wanted is already snapped up.
It's so fun watching to see what colors they end up, and they're such sweet little birds. Congratulations on your new additions! I hope you enjoy your seramas as much as I enjoy mine.
