Our Little hen was attacked today. Likely a dog. She was wet. A large tear in her skin ~3cm x5 cm with two puncture wounds causing a 0.5 cm x 0.5 cm by 0.5 cm muscle injury each. We closed her skin with sutures and washed with diluted betadine. She is limping. Her breathing is regular, panting a bit at first but has calmed down. She is still pecking and drinking. Any other suggestions? I am worried about infection.

Sounds like you did a great job of getting her cleaned and seen up. Are you keeping her inside now? I would be concerned about flies too.

No flies yet. It was a cold winter in Chicago. It is under her wing so it is covered a bit.
Thanks for the reassurance!

I have a hen that was also attacked by a dog. The picture you posted looked like the identical wound! I could see her wing bones and everything. I figured she was a goner for sure and since I couldn't even find enough skin to sew together, I just basted her with Bu-Kot , put her in a small cage so she couldn't move or flap much and hoped for the best. Later that day, she laid an egg! Didn't think she'd last the night, but next day she was eating, drinking and...laid another egg! That was almost a month ago and she is still around and healing steadily...she's even got some feather growth back! So, I'd say your hen is gonna be fine, especially since she had a fine surgeon!

Thanks! She made it through the night. She is still eating and drinking. Hoping for the best.
